Betsy Schmalz Ferguson

Betsy Schmalz has been an innovator in the cosmetic and fragrance business for many years, working with top industry leaders in the development of new brands, products and technologies throughout her career.

Betsy began her career in the International Division of Revlon. Based in London, she was part of the sales promotion team for the Ultima II division, covering prestige department stores. Continuing to build her international expertise, she then joined Clinique International where she was responsible for creative marketing and new product development.

Deciding to move into the domestic side of the industry, Betsy joined Revlon USA as Vice President of Group III, responsible for new product development for several brands, including Borghese, Terme di Montecatini, Ultima II, and Prestige Fragrances.  As a result of her success at Revlon, Betsy was invited to rejoin the Estée Lauder Companies as Senior Vice President of Corporate Product Development. Her supervisory responsibilities included overseeing product development for the company’s most prominent brands: Estée Lauder, Aramis and Prescriptives, as well Corporate Fragrance Creation worldwide, leading her team in the development of innovative new products.

Betsy then joined Gryphon, Inc., the development/operational arm of both Bath and Body Works and Victoria’s Secret, as Vice President of Product Development. Shortly after her arrival, the brands formed independent units and she took charge of Product Development for both Bath and Body Works and a newly-created Innovations Group for Victoria’s Secret. She also helped form and launch a new division for The Limited called Beauty Avenues. Under her leadership as Executive Vice President, Beauty Avenue’s development groups became well known for successfully marketing thousands of new products and fragrances, leading the industry in innovation and speed to market.

Betsy is currently the President of American Flavors and Fragrances. In addition to focusing on flavors and fragrances for personal care and household products, the company also provides strategic development and consulting services for a wide range of companies. She is an active member of Cosmetic Executive Women and Fashion Group. She is also on the Advisory Board for the Fashion Institute of Technology Master’s Program and an adjunct professor for their undergraduate Cosmetic Marketing Program.

Betsy resides in Colts Neck New Jersey with her husband, Tom Ferguson, and her two children, Brian and Emma Schmalz. She is very active in her community, on the Board for Family and Children Services, the advisory board for the Upper Room Spiritual Center in Neptune, New Jersey, and the Board of Trustees for the Riverview Medical Center Foundation in Red Bank, New Jersey.
